The winning moment
The newly crowned MISS PROGRESS INTERNATIONAL 2017 - Mary Grace Jedaver Pancho Opingo's winning project dedicated for human rights :
CARAVAN FOR PROGRESS iLOVE IPs (i-Literate, O-Optimize, V-Value, E-Empower Indigenous People )
The Philippines is blessed to have made up of diverse culture and rich cultural heritage. In 2013 census by the Philippine Statistics Office, the country has about 14 to 17 million indigenous people.
Indigenous People (IP’s) refer to a distinct group of people sharing common bonds of language, customs, traditions and artistic skills. Filipino IP’s rooted from a diverse range. The highland ethnic nations have co-existed with the lowland Austronesian ethnic nations for thousands of years in the Philippine archipelago.
The Philippine Constitution under Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA, 1997) recognizes, protects, promotes and strengthens the rights of the Indigenous People.
Identified Problems that hinders IP’s Progress:
Mostly, IPs in the Philippines are scattered and live in the interior places, uplands and coastal areas where access to basic needs, education, hospitals and potable water is highly remote. They usually rely on land to feed and sustain their lives. The struggles of these people were captured worldwide when an incident broke out in April 2016 of Lumads (local term for IPs) begging for food in the street but instead of rice, bullets of gunfire erupted to them killing 1 Lumad and many were hurt. Such a structural violence committed against humanity is a manifestation of DISCRIMINATION. Recognition of their identities, Understanding their Way of Life, Tolerance and promotion of their Right to Self-Determination are among those attributes to help elevate their lives.
My FOCUS GROUP for a project is the Indigenous People of Milaya, Midsayap, North Cotabato, Philippines. When I visited and personally talked with the tribal leader and the rest of the IP community, they expressed their sentiments that they felt rejected by the urban people. They seemed isolated, mocked and labeled as beggars and “people from the mountain” because of the clothes they wear.
“Caravan for Progress: i-LOVE IPs” helps promote the rights of the IPs, be recognized and protected.
Literate and liberate IPs through education.
Optimize IPs confidence through personality development and organized sustainable organic farming.
Value its customs, tradition and distinctive cultural trait.
Empower them to preserve their rights, live a sustainable life and promote intercultural solidarity among the people.
1. Visited and reached out various IP communities to experience and understand their way of living, customs, traditions and hear their aspirations.
2. Visited and conducted outreach programs to remote areas and mountainous places to amplify information on basic hygiene, personality development, and promotion of their rights and introduce the importance of education.
3. Conducted school tours and interactive programs to educate primary and secondary school students about IP culture and its way of living through inter-ethnic dialogue to STOP Discrimination.
4. Organized and solicited sponsors for foods, clothes, and school supplies in every Caravan for Progress Programs and Activities.
5. Joined different events and several speaking engagements to promote and strengthen the Caravan for Progress: i-LOVE IP Project.
6. Guesting in multiple media appearances like Radio, TV and Magazine Interviews and social media blogging to spread and amplify the project’s mission and vision, to make the campaign more effective and relevant.
